Award of Merit

Owner: Cobb County Water System
Lead Design Firm/Structural Engineer: Heath & Lineback Engineers Inc.
Contractor/Civil Engineer: Archer Western Contractors LLC

A 2018 failure at South Cobb’s Wastewater Reclamation Facility influent lift station caused a backup of its combined sewer overflow system that spilled sewage into the Chattahoochee River. Archer Western Contractors moved to stop the spill by utilizing the tunnel’s construction shaft for bypassing the influent pump station. Crews installed submersible pumps approximately 90 ft deep into the tunnel system. Archer Western then worked with Heath & Lineback Engineers to design a semipermanent system that allowed the installation of additional pumps, reaching the bottom of the 200-ft-deep construction shaft. The system lowered sewage levels down to an elevation where Cobb County could safely access and repair the existing influent lift station. Work was completed adjacent to an active airport runway with a 45-ft height restriction, which required the modular tower frame to be constructed in 20-ft sections. The $6.2-million project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.
