Latitude

Description

Huston's Island is located north of Bartlett's Ferry Dam. It is also referred to as Kudzu Island and Chimney Island. The island gets its name from its previous owner, Tom Huston. Tom Huston was the founder of Tom's Peanuts in Columbus, Georgia in the mid 1920s.

Huston first saw the island while boating a few years after Bartlett's Ferry backwaters created Lake Harding. Huston fell in love and decided to build a summer home there. Not wanting to disturb the natural landscape, he had the wood for the home cut on the mainland and rafted over to the island.

Huston named the house 'Halawaka' for the creek which flows into the lake from the Alabama side. In the 30s or 40s, the house burned to the ground.
